Lineage Key Index (complete to date)

A William Parke (but line is named for son Arthur) (represented; DNA) This lineage actually begins with a William Parke b. abt. 1656 in Ulster Prov., Ireland.
Recently, there has been some question as to whether this William is the father or
grandfather – that perhaps the father was John. (Parke Society Library books.)
There may be a connection with lineage Keys JJ, JP, and XW.

(PS#886, 1442, 1529, 1531, 1568, and a host of others (15) who are no longer living or active)

B Andrew Park (ca. 1720-??) married ?? supposedly of County Donegal, Ireland.
Source material: Notable Southern Families Vol. 6 page 87-88.
Perhaps five children (we have vital statistice only for Robert):

Robert (ca. 1740-??) married ca. 1762 Nancy Aiken. Eight children, for one of which we have issue.
We have group sheets for 4 of his children. Possible connection with Lineage Key FU, based on
conjectural evidence.Margaret married Patrick Campbell. Supposedly had two sons, surnamed Campbell
And also Mary Parks; Nancy Parks; and maybe also a Matthew Parks. This is one of the lines that has
been transcribed from earlier compilations, in this case the volume known as Notable Southern Families by Zella Armstrong. This material needs to be used with care. We have no representatives of this line,
and obviously no DNA tests. (Not Represented.)

  • Margaret married Patrick Campbell, supposedly had two sons, surnamed Campbell.

I Known as the Mungo Park line in honor of the Scotch Explorer of Africa
born 1771, it traces back to an Archibald Park in Scotland (1682-1768). The immigrant ancestor
is David Park (1833 England-1913 probably Ontario, Canada) who married in 1854, Julia Ann
Gardiner in England. David (1I1) Park (engineer) came to Chatham, ONT in 1866.
They had ten children, six of whom were born in England, the remaining four in Ontario or
Muskegon, MI. We have issue only for one. This is an immigrant line.

Moniker: Roger (WJ, 1682, K)

(PS#1331LL, #535 Past LL, and many members, some of which are still active.)

L Roger Parke of Rye, NY (ca. 1638-ca. 1690). (Represented) Many questions concerning this
particular line. DNA is needed to sort out this line, thus far no suitable male heir has been
found to accomplish this. This Roger was supposedly married twice, secondly to a Sophia Jans Claes.
Three children are listed but it is clear that there are erroneous claims here. The main source is
an article in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. XLIX, 1918,
pgs 295-2976, 382-383. Reference is also made to this Roger in FS Parks, Vol. III, p. 73, and in Families of Rye, pp. 431ff. It was substantially confused by the Becker work, The Parke Family, (1979) which made unwarranted assumptions. Currently there is no active
member in this line, and no male Park/e/s heir known from which we might work on DNA testing.

Source Material: [Some of which have added to the confusion surrounding this lineage key.] Park Records, Volume 3, Frank Sylvester Parks, (1925) pages 73-79, regarding the NY line; The Parke Family, Dorothy Becker, PS#368, (1979), regarding the NJ line most of which can now
be identified with the Lineage Key “K”;

and Probate Records at White Plains and Rye, NY” pgs. 295-297, 382-383; and many other works

  • Thomas (3L24) (1720, NY-a1787, NY), m. Martha Carpenter in 1747, 9 childrn.

O John Park (c1760, Ireland-???) married in 1797, Mary Ann McGee. Immigrated from Belfast, N Ireland c. 1760
to Pittsburgh, PA. Information found on Group sheets for birth can not be correct if he is supposed
to have come to this country in 1760. Little is known of this line. There is no representatives of
this line in The Society, and no DNA tests.

Source Material: This entry was written up based up an entry from the National Cyclopedia of American Biography, Vol. 35: P. 393, concerning the ancestry of one
Harry Wiswall Parke of Toledo, OH, merchant and public servant.

  • John E. Parke (1807-???) m. Jane Hannen. Many children, of which only one is named.

P Peter Parke of CT (b.1726, perhaps Scotland-??) (represented; DNA) He married 1748, Lucy
McDowell at Stonington, CT. Perhaps immigrated from Scotland, though there is no proof of this as yet.
Resided in CT in 1738. Ten children, but issue is documented for only two of them. All the children were
born in Stonington, CT. This line is frequently referred to as Chart 17. This
supposedly is an immigrant line but yet to be fully proved.

Source materials: Genealogy of the Parke Families in Connecticut, Frank Sylvester Parks,

  • Melvin (2P2) (1751 CT-1804) m. Margaret Palmer, Ten children.

Q John Parke (01Q1) of Virginia, has been merged into LK= K to become John (03K1).
R Richard Parke (c1602 England-1665 MA) (represented; DNA) A miller from England to Watertown,
MA 1635 aboard the Defence; m. (1) in England Margery (Crane?), four children, named below;
m. (2) after 1656, Sarah (Collier) Brewster, widdow of Love Brewster, no issue. This is an Immigrant Line.

  • Richard (2R1) (c1628-ca. 1711) m. Mary (Unknown), two children known.
There is some debate as to the existance of this Richard: F.S. Parks deals with this in his
Massachusettes volume on this line. Descendants of this line have a Lineage Key of “R1” in the membership database.

  • Thomas (2R2) (1628. England-1690, MA) m. Abigail Dix, nine children.
Descendants of this line have a Lineage Key of “R2” in the membership database.

Isabel (2R3) (c1628, England-1665, MA) m. Frances Whitmore; seven children.
Descendants of this line have a Lineage Key of “R3” in the membership database.

Elizabeth (c1631, England-1690, MA) m. Edward Winship; seven children.
Descendants of this line have a Lineage Key of “R4” in the membership database.

There is sometimes a reference made to a Sarah Parke born of the marriage of Richard and Sarah
(Collier) Brewster, widow of Love Brewster. We believe that this is a mis-identification with the
Sarah Parke (3R7) daughter of Thomas (2R2) and Abigail Dix.

There has been much confusion over this Richard, due to an assumption made in the Parke Scrapbooks
by Ruby Parke Anderson, that this Richard was a son of Robert Parke who came in 1630 aboard the
Winthrop Fleet. While it is true that Robert did have a son named Richard, there is no evidence that he
actually came to this country. Furthermore there is a tremendous amount of ancedotal evidence that there
was no relationship between this Richard and that Robert. There are no intermarriages until over a century
later; there is no witnessing of one another’s deeds, covenants or other legal documents at any time. The
name Robert does not appear in this line until much later, nor does the name Richard appear in any of the
Robert lines either. There was no known social intercourse between the two families. Finally, there was
considerable distance in terms of social status between Robert and his family, styled a ÒgentlemenÓ, and
Richard who was a miller by trade. This is an example of how incorrect data continues to be perpetuated
throughout the years. There has also been debate concerning the existence of the Richard (2R1), but that is
generally accepted now, although more definitive proof would be welcome. Finally the surname of Richard’s
(1R1) wife Margery as being “Crane” has been floated much, but there still is no good proof of this fact.

Moniker: Richard (MA, 1635,R)

  • Samuel (3S1) (b1672, CT-bef1700) m. Elizebeth Eddy in 1695; 4 children.

(Evelyn) Knipe, and had 2 children by first marriage, 4 children by second marriage, perhaps more.

There is a tie in to George Washington, first President of the United States as follows. He married
Martha (Dandridge) Custis, as her second husband. She was the widow of Daniel Parke Custis, who was the
son of John Custis who married Frances Parke, daughter of Col. Daniel Parke, (Daniel, William). Martha
Dandridge had four children by Daniel Parke Custis, and they were raised in the household of George
Washington. Through her son John Parke Custis there is a line to Robert E. Lee of Civil War fame.

This line is not as well documented as one would have liked, with many blanks yet to be filled in.
Further research is being done by PS#1498, Randall Lee Dickenson.

[A historical tidbit here: There are several recognized genealogical
numbering systems (of which the Parke Society is one). Reginald Henry created what has come to be
known as the Henry System, which uses a series of digits to describe the place of the descendant in
the family scheme. It can get rather complex as the generations go, and once you move beyond the
9th child you run into the possibility of confusion. If you see in a compiled genealogy
something like: 138523, you are looking at a Henry Number.]

which has since been disproved. In letters sent back to England he was reported to have been
    apprenticed to a tin smith.

  • Joseph, (02KK13), (1810, Eng-1865, MI) married Nancy Ann Coon, 1832, NY, had 9 children.

Others coming later:

DNA testing would be a definite plus for this lineage.

There is confusion as to the parentage of this Samuel Park. Some researchers believe that his father
was a William Park who immigrated from Scotland before the Revolutionary War, settling in South Carolina.

However there exists a considerable number of researchers who claim the ancestor as a John Park,
born 1736, lived and died 1779 in SC, who married a Ann (Unknown), circa 1759, who was also born in SC
and had perhaps six children.

What to do? The lines from Samuel and Jane on down seem to have good paper trails. No definitive
evidence has been offered for either William or John as the predecessor to Samuel, and yet there is
extant some information as to the household of John which does include the said Samuel which fits
nicely into the scheme of things. So while there is no proof certain at this time of exact
parentage of Samuel The Society has chosen to create a group sheet for John (01VX1) with Samuel
being the fifth child (02VX5). The other children of this John with approximate dates of birth are:
Joseph, 1759; Mary, 1761; Margaret, 1763; John, 1765; and William, 1769.

William Park, from Scotland about the time of the Revolutionary War, settling in South
Carolina.

  • Samuel Park, his son (c1767, Scotland-c1855, Maury Co., TN) (represented), married
Jane Thompson in 1792, possibly in South Carolina. One child known from the Lineage Application,

understand that three brothers came to the Philadelphia area prior to the Revolutionary War – one
went further north to Massachusettes [sic], one remained in Pennsylvania, and one [William, above]
went south to South Carolina.” David L. Parke, then Historian, surmised that this line might be
tied to the so called Arthur line, Lineage Key A, but no DNA testing has been done on this line to
    confirm this possibility.

Abner Park(e) (02GY1), (c1797, NY – 1880, OH) married Sarah Pennell by 1824, in New Jersey.
Scant materials exist for this line. Member’s Lineage application gives the father of John
Abner Park(e) as a David Park(e). Member cites Virkus, Compendium of American Genealogy,
Vol. VI, Page 552 (1937). Virkus needs to be handled carefully as it has often been proven wrong.
Search of records within the Society turned up no definite connection for the David-John Abner-Abner
line, although circumstantial evidence does seem to point to a possible connection either to Roger,
LK=K or Alexander, LK=KY, as these lines have definitely identified members in the same areas as the
principals of this line at the same time. DNA testing on a known Park/e/s descendant would be most
helpful. The group sheets we have are based on searches of the relevant census records 1850 and later.

Source materials: Virkus, Compendium, Vol. VI; Lineage papers and correspondence of descendant
members, census work.

KY Alexander Park (c.1709, Scotland or Ireland – ????, NJ); represented; married Unknown sometime
before c. 1739. Possibly a total of five children of which three came or were born in New Jersey between
1739 and 1744. The two earlier children born in Ireland, stayed in Ireland. It is believed that Alexander
perhaps came originally from Scotland, to Ireland, and thence to the Colonies.

Source materials: lineage papers and correspondence of descendant members, DNA evidence.

Children of Alexander:

LY William Parkes (1801, Eng. – ????, probably IA); represented; married Sarah Redfern, 1825,

was a second marriage (and divorce), the two children of that second marriage taking the Parks name
instead of using their birth name of Slack. This is an Immigrant Line.

Source materials: lineage papers and correspondence of descendant members, Census Analysis.

While, technically the descendant member does not have a verified Park/e/s line from this lineage key
(they do have another verified line via Roger, LK=K), nonetheless this line is catalogued because
there were actual blood Park/e/s descendants, and further, because the “adopted name” ancestors carry the
Park/e/s name.

MY Thomas Park (???? – ????); represented; married Abigael (Unknown), bef. 1793. Early
generations are lacking in detail. Research currently on hand is in excess of 15 years old.
Very possibly this Thomas is a descendant of the Robert-Thomas Line (LK=T), a possibility
strengthened by the fact that a descendant of this Thomas is named Minor Robert, a given name
found only in the Robert-Thomas line. Further research with newly available materials and DNA
testing could probably prove or disprove this connection. Only two children are known and the
documentation is thin.

RY Aaron Parks, (1764, CT Ð 1848, ??) (Represented) married 1) Rachael (Dolly) Walker, 1785,
Windham Co., CT, secondly a Rebecca (Unknown) circa 1806. There is a total of 11 children by these two marriages.

This is another lineage that has offered some challenges over the years. Current theory now makes the
above named Aaron as the forebear of this line, all descendant members of which come through Ebenezer Walker
(Wesley in some places) to Alanson or Alonzo. Variations in names are not uncommon in this period of time.
While there is still some question as to the first two generations, the line is solid via a paper trail from
Alanson on. DNA evidence leads us to believe that this line is connected to the Robert-Thomas line (LK= T).
Further research is needed on this point.

By the first marriage there are eight known children:

  • Ebenezer Walker Parks (1788 Ð 1851, MI) m1) Roxcey Olds c. 1810, 4 children; m2) Mary Gildreth, 1831,
4 children; m3) Caroline (unknown) after 1844, one child known.

Other children by this first marriage were: Orrille (1786); Sabrina (1792); Mary (1794); Alanson (1798);
Aaron Jr. (1800); Susan Prescott (1801); and Carlton (1802).

By the second marriage there are three known children:

  • Hiram P. (1808);
  • Harry C. (1810);

TY Thomas Parks, (1756, PA Ð ?) (Represented) married Hannah Sweet, before 1782, (c1760 Ð 1791).
Information is very limited. It has been presumed (not proven) that Thomas had brothers Arthur and James,
since their names often appeared together in court documents of Fleming, Mason and Bourbon Counties, KY.
Due to the fact t, and they all appear to have gone to Kentucky, as their names all appear in many court
documents of Fleming, Mason and Bourbon County. ly group sheets were ever provided, little is know of this
line. There was at least one child, perhaps more. Source: Lineage Papers of PS#235 (Deceased).

UY Reuben Parks (1769, MD Ð 1845, MD) (Represented) married Priscilla Croswell, 1805, Accomac, VA.
Information is scant and sometimes confusing. Reuben’s farther has been reported either as a Job Parks who
married Rachel Crockett, or as another Reuben. There is also some confusion as to the number of children:
the Society is accepting the number as seven.

If the parent is indeed Job, then this line connects to LK=VV, John of Accomack Co., VA
[Job Jr.-Job Sr.-Arthur-John 01VV1 by his first marriage]. An acceptable DNA candidate in this line would
solidify this connection.
